Tom Clark Carin Studio Gnome – Couch Potatoe 1988 #50 5052 Signed Dimensions: 5″ x 3.5″ x 3.25″ Perfect condition! No fading, cracks, chips, breaks, rough or sharp points. (May, 1988) The Couch Potatoe is in his favorite position, with his shoes off and the “telly on. His Woodspirit friends gave him this nickname because he has a “pot’ and a big toe. He meant to mend that hole in his sock, but he decided to wait for Thimblena to come by and mend it for him. He’s been on , the couch for so long that his potato has begun to wither! His coin is a German beer token and his pillow is a French fried potato. The Couch Potatoe was watching his favorite television show, “Masterpiece Theater.” But he has dozed off, and now he’ll miss what comes on next – “The World of Tom Clark” video. He hasn’t even noticed that a leaf has drifted onto him. But he was last heard to mutter, “Leaf me alone.”. –Dr. Thomas F. Clark Tom Clark is a distinguished American artist and sculptor known for his whimsical and highly detailed gnome figurines. Born in North Carolina, Clark originally worked as a professor of religion and philosophy before pursuing his passion for sculpture. His work is celebrated for blending storytelling, folklore, and artistry to create figurines that are as meaningful as they are enchanting. Cairn Studios, co-founded by Tom Clark, became the exclusive producer of his gnome sculptures. The studio’s name is derived from “cairns,” which are stacks of stones used as markers, symbolizing guidance and a sense of place—a fitting theme for Clark’s creations. Each gnome is carefully crafted from resin and hand-painted, featuring intricate details that often incorporate natural elements like acorns, leaves, mushrooms, and coins, many of which carry symbolic meanings. Clark’s gnomes are not just decorative pieces; they are storytelling objects, each with its own unique personality, backstory, and often a touch of humor. Many are inspired by mythology, literature, or everyday life, making them relatable and heartwarming. These pieces have become beloved collectibles around the world, prized for their charm, artistry, and the sense of magic they bring into people’s homes. Estate find.
